Abilene Christian University, or ACU for short, is a private university in Abilene, which is a city in the US state of Texas, situated in Taylor and Jones counties, with a population of approximately 120 000 inhabitants, estimated during the 2008 census, serving as the county seat of Taylor County.
ACU was established in 1906 and grew from the desire of A. B. Barret and Charles Roberson to form a school in West Texas. The university first opened its doors to students as Childers Classical Institute, its current name being formally adopted in 1920.
Abilene has today an enrollment of about 4800 students and its mission is to `educate students for Christian service and leadership throughout the world`.
